Met een opleiding geneeskunde en tandheelkunde gevolgd door vier jaar opleiding in de mond-, kaak- en aangezichtschirurgie heeft hij een zeer uitgebreide kennis van het vak. Daarna werkte hij nog een extra opleiding in faciale esthetiek af. Met deze behaalde diplomaâs pakt hij jouw gelaatsproblemen met alle zorg en expertise aan.
Gedurende zijn opleiding besteedde Dr. Van Hemelen extra aandacht aan kaakchirurgische technieken. Tijdens zijn stage in AZ St. Jan Brugge kreeg hij de indirecte prikkels van âthe Godfatherâ in maxillo-faciale chirurgie: Prof Dr. Hugo Obwegeser. De Zwitserse begeesteraar entte zijn orthognatische principes op Belgische bodem doorheen de handen van Prof. Dr. Mommaerts, waar Dr. Van Hemelen gretig op inpikte.
Nadien verfijnde hij zijn oncologische skills in East Grinstead (UK). Hij specialiseerde zich in de tumorchirurgie en ook de microvasculaire reconstructietechnieken werden gefinetuned.
Dr. Van Hemelen eindigde zijn opleiding als Fellow Esthetische Aangezichtschirurgie in Salt Lake City (USA) bij Dr. Brent Kennedy.
In 2004 behaalde hij het Europese certificaat van de Board Commissie (FEBOMFS).

Voorzitter van de wetenschappelijke vereniging MKA en Hoofd-Halschirurgie BVMKA-HH.
Councillor for Belgium European Society EACMFS (2022-2028).
Accreditatie specialist, goedgekeurd door de federale overheid tot 31.03.27.
Stagemeester voor de arts-specialist in opleiding MKA binnen AZ Monica en Heilige Hart Ziekenhuis Lier.
Momenteel is Dr. Van Hemelen voorzitter van het ZMACK waar hij sinds 1999 werkt. Hij is er ook het diensthoofd van de dienst MKA-Chirurgie in het AZ Monica ziekenhuis.
